What is Major Depression?
Major depression is an illness characterized by 2 or more weeks of persistent sad, anxious, irritable, or "empty" mood and/or a decreased ability to enjoy pleasurable things. Other symptoms can include:
- Feelings of hopelessness
- Feelings of worthlessness or guilt
- Problems or changes in your sleep
- Problems or changes in your appetite
- Decreased energy, fatigue, being "slowed down"
- Difficulty concentrating, remembering, making decisions
- Persistent physical symptoms that do not respond to treatment, such as headaches, stomach problems, and chronic pain
- Thoughts of death or suicide; suicide attempts
